Cantor Julie Berlin acquired a love for music as a young girl singing with her mother. Her musical enjoyment continued with her many years of choir participation and piano lessons. She developed a love of Jewish music singing in her south suburban Chicago temple’s youth choir and in preparing for her bat mitzvah. In high school she became an apprentice to her congregation’s cantor who often invited her to chant Torah and sing with her during Shabbat services. Cantor Berlin attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education.

 

Following her undergraduate studies she attended the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music in New York, where she earned a Master of Sacred Music and a Master of Religious Education as well as Cantorial ordination. Berlin served as Cantor of Temple Solel in Paradise Valley, Arizona for ten years and was their first cantor. Since 2008, Cantor Berlin has served Temple Beth-El in San Antonio,Texas as the first cantor in its nearly 150 year history.

 

Cantor Berlin and her husband, Rabbi Alan Berlin, are the proud parents of three young adults and have numerous cats and dogs.
